Lip Liner Tips

By Girija Shinde

Lipstick is the most important component of any make up. In fact, when the word make up is said the first thing that comes to anyone's mind is, lipstick. And why not, after all lipstick attracts attention and also makes the lips to look good. But as lipstick attracts attention, it is very necessary that the lipstick looks perfect. And for making the lipstick look perfect, certain things to be paid attention to very carefully, like the color of the lipstick, moisturizing the lips and the border of the lips. Lip liner does this job. Let's see some lip liner tips. Read on makeup.

Why to Apply a Lip Liner

As the name suggests, lip liner is meant to create a line, a border for the lips. Many a time, you must have experienced smudging and spreading of lipstick above and below your lips. It becomes a difficult task to rub off the extra lipstick especially, when you are done with your whole makeup! You must have also faced the problem of lipstick fading on the wrong time, i.e., when the party is in full swing! Lip liner is a remedy to all these problems. Lip liner is nothing but a type of colored cosmetic pencil, which comes with a sharpener! Lip liner gives an outline to your lips, which prevent the lipstick from bleeding. Lip liner also helps to keep the lipstick on the lips for a longer time. Besides all these uses, the main advantage of lip liner is that it gives the lips a concrete shape, which makes them stand out and look full. Read on natural looking makeup.

Lip Liner Tutorial - Types of Lip Liners

Now that we know the advantages of lip liners, let us see how and which lip liner to choose. Unlike lipsticks, there are no liquid lip liners. The ones which claim to be liquid, are actually in cream form. But cream lip liners are not much used. The ones which are popular, are the traditional lip liners which come along with a sharpener and the other, which is mechanical. There are advantages and disadvantages of both forms. Read on homemade lip gloss.

The advantages of classic lip liner is that you can sharpen the pencil whenever you want and that's why there is no danger of bacteria, and you also get a fine point every time, which is not possible in case of mechanical lip liner. The classic liner is kinda dry, which makes it is easier to carry. The advantages of mechanical lip liner is that you do not need to sharp it every now and then. Mechanical lip liners have a wetter look, which makes them look more natural, but it also becomes difficult to maintain them. Talking about the color of the lip liner, remember that lip liner should compulsorily match the color of the lipstick. One darker is okay, but it should never be dark than that and nor should it be lighter than the lipstick. The reasons are obvious, if the lip liner is fainter than the lipstick, it won't be seen, which means it will be useless. And if it is darker than the lipstick, only a border of lip liner will be seen on your lips, which will look comical as well as drastic! If you are not sure which color to buy or if you are not getting the same shade as the lipstick, go for colorless wax pencil. It will be the safest as it will perform the same job as other lip liners but without imparting any color. When it comes to price, you do not need to buy the costliest lip liners. The best lip liner can be as cheap as your lip balm! So just for the best brand. This was all the basic information about lip liners, now lets see some lip liner tips, starting from lip liner application.

Lip Liner Application
  • First of all clean your lips well, remove any signs of lip balm or gloss.
  • Be sure that the pencil is sharp enough. In case of mechanical lip liner, refrigerate it for a couple of minutes.
  • In case it becomes very pointed, do not try breaking the point! Just rub it onto a tissue.
  • To start with, make a dot in center of your upper as well as lower lip. In the same way, make a few more dots on the entire lips, keep a distance between them.
  • Start joining the dots one by one, with a firm hand. Continue till the edge of the lips.
  • Now wait for a second and carefully check in the mirror if any space is left, if you notice any space, fill it with light strokes.
  • You can apply lipstick now. See to it that the lip liner and lipstick look smooth.
These were some of the lip liner tips. I would like to give a parting lip liner tip. If your lips are thinner, apply very little lip liner, on the lip line as well as a bit above your original lip line. To make the lips smaller, apply a bit darker color than your lipstick and also apply a bit of foundation before applying the lip liner. Hope these lip liner tricks and tips help you to have irresistible lips!

Lip Makeup Tips

By Puja Lalwani

Lip makeup can look exactly the way you want it to look. It can make you look younger, or older, or make your lips appear thinner or fuller. It all depends on the kind of look you are trying to achieve. That is why we have here, different lip makeup tips that will give you a chance to flaunt your lips, and make them kissable and desirable.

How to Apply Lip Makeup

The first step involved in creating the look of those luscious lips is to take care of your lips. That means, you have to bid goodbye to dry, flaky lips. Ensure your lips are soft and protected by applying any suitable lip balm, at regular intervals. Lip balm not only protects the lips from changes in the environment, mainly harsh sunlight or dry weather, but also retains the little moisture present in them and prevents them from becoming dry. Once you have attained the desired soft texture, go ahead and try out these miraculous lip makeup tips, which will give you those beautiful lips you've always coveted, and can have now.
  1. Save Them before you Paint Them: Lip balm is not only good for dry, cracked lips, it also makes a great base for lip makeup, and protects them from the harshness of various cosmetics. Apply a good, protective layer of the best lip balm before you begin.
  2. Get in Shape: Use a lip liner to outline your lips. Choose a shade that is close to the lipstick you are going to use. After applying lip liner, use a lip brush to gently blend in the lip liner, but still maintain the line. Not only does a lip liner define the shape of the lips, it also prevents the lip color from spreading into tiny lines around the mouth. For instance, if you want to give your upper lip a sharp 'V' dip, a lip liner is the ideal way to achieve it. If your lips droop at the corners, you may use a lip liner to give them a slightly lifted appearance. Read more on lip liner tips.
  3. Color Me Red (or Pink, or any shade you like): To be able to make the lipstick last longer, it is important that you apply it twice. Choose a shade that complements your skin tone. Some of you may want to jazz it up by using red lip makeup. However, remember that it is neither suitable for teenagers, nor for very old women. It suits women only of a particular age group. Moreover, if your lip color is slightly on the darker side, using a mild foundation on the lips will make the lipstick appear as it is on your lips, and allow for longer wear of the lipstick. After the first application of the lipstick, press a tissue between the lips and blot the color, followed by a second application. This will make the lip color last longer.
  4. Gloss it Up: Dab a bit of gloss on your lips to give them a fuller look. Women who are already blessed with full lips should avoid using gloss as it further enhances the fullness of the lips. In some cases, you may use gloss without the lipstick. This is especially helpful when you are trying to achieve a nude look for the lips.
Always use a lip makeup remover to remove all the makeup as prolonged application may affect the color and texture of the lips.

How to do Lip Makeup for Different Lip Thicknesses

The procedure to apply lip makeup for lips of different shapes and sizes is the same as above, only the intensity of application of each product will vary.

Lip Makeup Tips for Thin Lips
For thin lips, when using the lip liner, apply it just outside the edge of the lips. Don't go overboard as this will distort the shape of your lips. Choose a color that is similar to the lipstick you are applying. Fill in the lip color, and use gloss at the center of your lower lip, to give them a fuller look.

Lip Makeup Tips for Full Lips
For thick lips, you may do without the use of the lip liner. However, if you still want to use it, apply it just around the inner edge of the lips. Blend the liner well with a lipstick of your choice. Try to avoid darker shades as these will make the lips stand out further. Avoid the use of lip gloss.

Some women might even want to opt for permanent lip makeup. However, it is an expensive procedure, and not feasible for many. Moreover, with these lip makeup tips, and being the natural beauty you are, do you really think you need a 'more' permanent solution to your problem?

History of Lipstick

By Bidisha Mukherjee

A modern day lipstick is made up of a large number of ingredients like oils, waxes, emollients, pigments, etc. The wax gives a stabilized shape to the lipstick while the oil and fat content give it a soft yet firm texture. The emollients like aloe vera or vitamin E helps to keep the lips in well-moisturized condition. It may also have other additives like alcohol as preservatives as well as sunscreen and fragrance. Lipstick is an indispensable part of the makeup kit of millions of modern women all across the world. This is mainly because, it is an easy and inexpensive way to make a fashion statement. However, if you look into the lipstick history, you will find that the practice of using it in order to give an attractive look to woman's lips started thousands of years ago.

History of the Lipstick

Various historical records suggest that lipstick origins in ancient Mesopotamia almost 5000 years ago. It has been found that the women of the ancient Babylonian city of Ur used to mix crushed semi precious stones with a paste and applied it on the lips to add color to them. Evidence has also been found that women in Indus valley civilization applied red color on lips. In ancient Roman civilization, women who belonged to the upper class used lip colors that they manufactured at home.

In ancient Egypt too, women loved to tint their lips with attractive purple-red color. They used to combine iodine and a compound of bromine known as bromine mannite to obtain that lip color which proved to be highly toxic. For that reason, it was later known as 'kiss of death'. It is said that Cleopatra, the last pharaoh of ancient Egypt, used crushed carmine beetles, ant's eggs and henna to prepare the luscious red color for her lips. To add some shimmering effect to the lip color, extracts from fish scales were also used.

The most obvious question that comes to our mind when we are discussing about history of lipstick is 'who made the first lipstick'. The credit for developing the first lipstick or the lip color in the form of a stick is given to Abu al-Quasim al-Zahrwai. He belonged to Andalusia area of Spain and is often referred to as father of modern surgery. He created the first lipstick at around 900 A.D. He used wax to form the base to which fragrances were added and then pressed into a mold.

During the Middle Ages, the popularity of lipstick declined. In that era, lipstick was considered to be a cosmetic which is suitable for prostitutes and lower class women. Hence, women belonging to upper class stopped using it. Lipstick once again regained its popularity in the 16th century. It was the Elizabethan era and Queen Elizabeth I, England, herself used bright red color on her lips along with chalk white face powder. Once again, in the middle of the 17th century, lipsticks faced stiff opposition from an England pastor named Thomas Hall. He led a movement that strongly opposed the use of any kind of cosmetics and regarded painting of faces as ‘Devil’s Work’. In 1770, the British Parliament passed a law to ban wearing of lipstick. It stated that if a woman wears lipstick, she could be tried as a witch!

In the late 1890s, the popularity of lipstick started rising all over again. Gradually, it became a craze among women. The Hollywood film industry had a major contribution in this regard. Women wanted to have an enhanced and fuller lips like their favorite actresses and thus sale of lipstick went higher and higher. The small pot of lip color was replaced by the push up tube around 1915. Women wanted a lipstick that stays on their lips for a longer period of time. Thus the "kiss-proof" lipstick came into being. It was introduced into the market by a cosmetic company called Hazel Bishop Inc. in 1950.

From the lipstick history you must have now come to know how it evolved over a period of time to its present form. Today, one can find lipstick of a wide range of shades. Apart from the color choices, there are also lipsticks in the market with special ingredients that are essential for lip care. Like, some of them have sunscreens, moisturizers and conditioners in order to keep the lips in healthy condition.

Flavored Lipstick

By Aparna Jadhav

Lipsticks, being the favorite make up accessory in a woman's purse, is always the reflection of her choice and "taste". In the millions of shades and colors which are presented by the well known cosmetic brands, today there are a number of flavors which they flaunt as well. The whole concept of flavored lipsticks was started keeping in mind that, since most of the times, lipsticks are tasted by the ladies while they are on, they might as well be flavored. Thus came the many lipsticks which were colored in the same colors of the flavor which they boasted. For example, a cherry flavored lipstick was red in color and a chocolate flavored was brown. Like these, there are many flavors in the market today, which are conveniently preferred by women all over the world. Thus find your choice of flavored lipsticks out of the few mentioned in the following paragraphs.

Flavored Lipstick

You must have always wondered why do we feel the taste of a lipstick simply by smelling it? The answer is quite simple as, your ordinary lipsticks which are not sweetened or flavored, only have flavor oils as an additional component. These flavor oils are lip safe fragrances as they only smell but not taste. When commercial brands use these flavor oils to make lipsticks, they only put the smell of a certain fruit or product which gives you the idea of the lipstick. More on long lasting lipstick.

Flavored lipsticks, however have an actual sweetener, commonly aspartame or any other sugar substitute. This sweetener tricks the brain into thinking that the lipstick has the particular flavor but the fact is that you are only smelling it. Thus, when you buy flavored lipsticks, you have a tendency to keep licking your lips and ingesting the flavoring oils. There are many organic cosmetic brands which do not use any animal products to make their lipsticks and only use herbal extracts. Thus, it would be advisable that you use flavored lipsticks, glosses and lip balms produced by these companies.

Tinted Lip Balm

By Florentyna K

Lip balm is basically an ointment for keeping your lips, moist and crack free. The natural ingredients in lip balm promote the healing of chapped lips. Lip balm is mostly made from petroleum jelly or natural substance like beeswax. Lip balm is different from lipstick or lip gloss, both of which only serve a cosmetic purpose. Until now, lip balms were available in neutral, colorless shade. However, many cosmetic companies have now introduced tinted lip balms which, apart from nourishing your lips also give them a desired color.

Tinted Lip Balm

Lip balms are tinted according to the flavor they represent. Strawberry flavored lip balm comes in a lovely shade of pink, while cherry lip balm comes in a bright red color. Deep red colored cranberry and purple blueberry lip balm is also popular. Bubblegum flavored lip balm comes in a variety of funky colors such as fluorescent green, yellow and orange. Mint flavored lip balm is available in cool blue color. Other flavors such as peach, coffee are available in neutral colors. Tinted lip balms allow you to apply a subdued version of your favorite lipstick. Since, the tint of lip balms is very light, they render a natural appearance to your lips. Some tinted lip balms also come with a shimmering effect which alleviates the need for applying a lip gloss.

Just like ordinary lip balms, tinted lip balms also include an array of nourishing ingredients. These lip balm ingredients include vitamin E, jojoba oil, almond oil and other nutrients. Tinted lip balm with SPF 15 or more provides protection against sun damage. Sun damage is the main cause of cracked, chapped lips, since the lips dehydrate and lose all of their moisture. Beauty Basics Tips

By R.L. Fielding

Despite the media coverage of makeover reality shows, the majority of Americans are not looking for extreme transformations. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, most of us want to look better, naturally, with 68-percent preferring a subtle change. And experts agree that looking your best could be accomplished at home for considerably less.

Dr. Linda Franks, a leader in the specialized skin care frontier, says "To get that timeless, healthy look you need to start with an appropriate skincare regime. Taking good care of your skin can stave off fine lines, wrinkles, age spots and even dry skin."

Doctors say whatever your skin type, the key is to cleanse it gently.
-- Avoid hot water and use lukewarm instead, to prevent over-drying.
-- And throw in the towel – traditional washcloths are too abrasive for the face, so use your hands and fingers.

Sixty-eight-percent of women claim to have sensitive skin which means dry, tight, chapped or easily irritated skin.
-- Moisturize regularly.
-- Avoid harsh cleansers with ingredients such as fragrances, dyes and preservatives because sensitive skin is easily damaged and takes longer to recover.

If your skin is dry and easily irritated, don’t wash more than once a day. You may risk stripping the skin of its natural oils.
-- Look for non-irritating cleansing washes that are soap-free.
-- Use light, oil-free, water-based moisturizers to help maintain the skin’s natural barrier.
-- Make sure to choose a facial moisturizer with an SPF of at least 15, which protects against both UVB and UVA rays.

Skin sensitivity may also result from the third most common, non-surgical skincare procedure known as Microdermabrasion. Microdermabrasion is a quick and easy, non-invasive procedure that helps to reveal healthier-looking skin by sweeping away dead skin cells.
-- Dr. Franks reveals that, following the treatment, the best way to avoid irritation is by opting for an ultra-gentle cleanser and moisturizer.
-- A new clinical study shows that PURPOSE gentle cleansing wash and dual treatment moisture lotion with spf 15 are compatible with this procedure.

How else can you obtain optimal skin health? Dr. Franks says, "Exercise opens up blood vessels to make skin look healthy and youthful. It’s so important for healthy skin."
-- Regular cardiovascular exercise increases blood flow to the skin which assists in collagen production.
-- Maintaining muscle mass through exercise can also help anchor and support skin, keeping it taut.
-- And drink up! At least eight, eight-ounce glasses of water a day are crucial for optimal skin hydration.

So before you sign on for an extreme and expensive makeover, just think back on some simple, beauty basics! You just might like what you see!

- Exfoliate your skin with a manual exfoliator the day before your wedding
- Have your brows professionally shaped prior to the wedding day. Nice brows are very important because they frame the eyes.
- Refresh your hair color a week before the wedding. Get rid of dark roots and split ends
- Book a day at the spa to de-stress and pamper yourself
- Remove all traces of makeup the night before your wedding. Avoid dry lips by putting a lip moisturizer on your lips before bed and the morning of your wedding. Your face should be clean and product free when the make-up artist arrives
- If you’re not hiring a make-up artist for the whole wedding day make sure you have a lipstick, powder and blotting sheets with you to touch up when needed

Beauty-Is it really SkinDeep

By Prerna Salla

I remember this chapter I had read in school, it was a story really of a little girl who had lost her mother. On being asked about the description of her mother, all she could say was, "My mother is the most beautiful woman in the world!" It was quite the other way round when she was discovered though! The question is, do we really view beauty as skin deep, or do we mean something more….

The true expression

Babies and beauty go hand in hand for me, I don’t really know about you, but for me this is horribly true! Why, you may ask? Well, for the simple reason that babies are the only toothless wonders that don’t require anything really to dress them up to the extent that women do (for a good reason of course!) and yet every child, irrespective of which part of the world he/ she might be is a unique gift for us humans to savor. There have been many people in this world who will go to any length to remain beautiful. It is no wonder then why these anti-ageing pills and botox treatments have worked so far! I think it all started with when we saw the first gray hair erupting and we literally pounced upon it with our magic wand, popularly known to us as hair-dye. There has been immense research within Yoga, as a study to improve one’s quality of life. It seems, an asana (Yogic forms are known as Asanas) in case performed 3-4 times in a day, can actually help you retard the finer aspects that depict ageing factor in us. It helps in diminishing and actually getting rid of white hair, improves the quality of skin, etc., all in all a natural form of life!

Its known as the Sarvang Asasna, an exercise that you do by lying on your back and slowly raising your feet above the ground to a form a ninety degree angle. Should you feel that difficult you may support your back with your hands, and slowly raise it in the same level of your shoulders.

Maintaining beauty, the positive way!
In the words of Audrey Hepburn, who gave in her pearls of wisdom for maintaining a beautiful soul, she was often quoted as saying, ‘to improve your smile, speak kind words to all, ‘to maintain a good body, feed the hungry’, ‘to improve your skin, feel the soul of a disappointed person, your kind words will make his heart lighter, allowing yourself to feel good, and the good feeling makes you more lively, ultimately making you glow. Although in the busy lives that we all live it’s not impossible to follow all that is mentioned above, I think the safest and most efficient manner to look beautiful would be to feel beautiful, as this body is yours, what you make out of it, will be your gift to the Almighty, because he made us with a complete positive mind. Our reactions to the world outside is what actually brought negativity in. In short, feel beautiful, to look beautiful, as no amount of growth hormones, meal replacements and healthy eating can ever show their results, to an unhappy soul. Ultimately we are what we think and eat! It’s not easy to follow a happy frame of mind all the time, but it sure is worth a try! Food for thought?! You bet, it’s more like feast for the mind!!
